Quick Post, Real Reminder
Separating your people into categories sounds a little calculating.
Maybe even slightly evil.
But honestly? I don’t give a toss (toss – UK term for don’t give a diddly-damn).
At this stage of life, I think it’s more than warranted.
One of the hardest lessons in Big Age is realizing that not everyone around you, and not everyone who has access to you, deserves all of you.
Some people are in your life until the wheels fall off. Others are there for a season or a reason.
Watch out for the season-and-reason folks. Spot them and place them where they need to be. I mean, seriously, how many times can we keep being disappointed by them? Thinking they meant more to us than they ever did? We simply miscategorized them. That’s OK. Lesson learned… or lesson still being learned.
Eventually, you have to pay attention. Love does not mean unlimited and unconditional access. And understanding a new-to-you truth doesn’t mean you have to like it, either.
I get it. I’m not some stank heartless wench, I promise you. And I know sometimes cutting people off feels impossible. But how about cutting them back?
You’ll make more room for the real ones who deserve your time and energy. The ones you genuinely look forward to sharing time and space with. The ones who would stop, drop, and roll their way to you if you ever needed them, no matter how long it’s been since you last spoke.
- The ones who answer the phone.
- The ones who check in.
- Those who pour into you when you need it or before you even know you need it.
- The ones who’ll initially defend your foolishness to some random chic, then swiftly cuss you the hell out afterward because you were clearly in the wrong, Irene!
Again, this isn’t about becoming a completely cold cow; it’s about being intentional.

In our Big Age, we’re preserving our laughs, tears, doubts, and cheers for those real ones. We know better now, and so are spending our energy wisely and not keeping score.
I’m going to slide in that perfect statement from the fabulous actress Viola Davis and what she said and meant about disappointing others. Click anywhere here.
Because for me, it has to be about being the person I would want someone to be for me. And if disappointing the rest is part of protecting that, then I’m beyond OK with that.
